Shall we wait for others to mitigate the climate change?
The recent unpredictable weather patterns linked to the climate change has raised serious concerns about the future of the ecosystem on earth. Climate change is no longer a future prediction, it's a reality as several countries have experienced catastrophic climate linked incidents. For instance, cloud bursts in certain parts of India are taking place frequently leading to flash floods. Similarly, unprecedented heavy rains are occurring more often in Europe and USA. In May 2023, Italy witnessed severe floods. In September 2023, even New York city was flooded due to heavy rains. Similarly, several people lost their lives due to the catastrophic cloud burst in the Indian state Sikkim. In September 2023, the devastating flood hit parts of eastern Libya all of a sudden that killed more than 10,000 people. On the other hand, Spain is reeling under warm weather condition even in the month of October (2023), otherwise known for the benign weather during autumn. The Europe witnessed the hottest weather condition in their history recently where temperature shoot up to 45 deg. Celsius. The above are the tip of the iceberg and world needs to prepare for the worst. The effects of the climate change are visible to everyone, still let's list some of the areas:
1. Humanitarian crisis: Aboriginal communities will be forced to leave their native land (either due to prolonged drought or due to flood). The melting of glaciers will lead to increase in the water levels that can cause incessive rains not following any previous weather pattern.
2. Economy: The cost of the climate linked calamities will be huge for sustaining developmental activities by poor countries. One has to remember that natural calamities cause large scale damage to infrastructure, public health issues put extra burden on existing medical facilities, requires additional resources to restore natural environments.
3. Ecosystem: No one exactly knows what in store. New invasive species may replace earlier ones. Unabated growth of pathogenic bacteria and viruses may spell a havoc as we already experienced the future during Covid19 pandemic. Some of the forests may disappear rapidly. The major and unknown threat may come from aquatic world because all waste that includes radioactive materials end up in sea. Scientific research will not be enough to prevent it.
4. Health: If temperature shoots up to 50 deg. Celsius, even best medical facilities will be not enough to save life. One can imagine the energy consumption and cost to develop health facilities.
The world has
come together to mitigate the effect of climate change and to prevent further
temperature rise. The Paris Agreement, often referred to as the Paris Accords
or the Paris Climate Accords, is an international treaty on climate change
which was adopted in 2015, the agreement covers climate change mitigation,
adaptation, and finance. Follow up to this, nations have adopted the Glasgow
Climate Pact, that aims to turn the 2020s into a decade of climate action and
support. All major powers have understood the gravity of the situation and
started taking steps to mitigate the effect of climate change. However, it
appears that the world is running out of time as damaged has already been done.
The blame game for the destruction of the environment would no longer help the
cause and it's time for action. We often encounter with the questions like what
we can do if other countries are not supporting the cause, or the government is
not interested to lower down the developmental activities leading to the deforestation.
It's a genuine question, but why government is in a hurry for the developmental
activities. Is not it to fulfil the aspirations of the common people like us? I tried to explain a climate linked situation in the science-fiction 'Destiny of an Alien
Life'. Certainly, the government is
working towards improving the living conditions of its citizens because people
have elected them to work for the betterment of the society. Therefore, we need
to blame ourselves too for the climate change. Then, how can we contribute to
reverse the climate change? Can we play any role?
Yes, if each one
of us plant a single tree every day on all available free place near to us, one
can imagine how many of trees will grow on earth in a year! Similarly, each one
of us can contribute to the cause by not polluting water bodies. Let's all come
forward with a helping hand to make the world a better place to live.
Otherwise, there will be no place on earth available with pure air to breath
and pure water to drink.
Don't believe? Read 'Destiny of an Alien Life' - you will find a clear picture of our future.
